Louise Hill lives and paints on Sark, producing work inspired by life in the windy and rugged
Channel Islands. She mostly paints with watercolours; enjoying the immediacy of them; their
light touch and translucency; nevertheless, she likes to push her watercolours with strong
contrasts and effects.
She has always been a fan of Pre-Raphaelite art, and was delighted to have an excuse to
create a piece inspired by long-time hero, William Morris, for the exhibition Radical Beauty.
Her painting for this exhibition captures the essence of the Arts and Craft Movement, which
was the quest for beauty through nature. Her inspiration was a poem by John Keats, (who
was certainly an inspiration to William Morris); Ode on a Grecian Urn, the concluding line
being:
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”
