Rae Bearder

Contributor

My name is Rae Bearder (née Le Page) and I was born and bred in Guernsey. After a long career in finance, I became mentally exhausted and started to weave as part of my recovery. I soon developed a passion for this ancient craft and now grow 17 varieties on my land at Bordeaux.

I make a large variety of baskets and sculptures, from the ancient Panier a Cou to full-sized horse sculptures. I grow the willow organically on my own land in the Vale, then harvest, sort and prepare it by hand. Finding calm in the craft, as well as making items, I teach every stage of willow work, from growing and hand-harvesting to shaping natural, handmade creations. I draw inspiration from Guernsey's beautiful natural environment and rich heritage. My baskets build on traditional designs, blending classic elements with contemporary functionality.
